Hiring with Purpose: The Key to Cultivating a Thriving Company Culture

Welcome to my episode, where I delve into the crucial topic of hiring and on boarding—the backbone of any successful organization. I’m Doug Thorpe, your guide through the maze of leadership and entrepreneurship, and in this show, I’m sharing insights from a recent conversation with Jen Thornton, the founder of 304 Coaching, on my podcast “Leadership Powered by Common Sense.”

The Art of Hiring Right

Hiring is not just about filling a vacancy; it’s about understanding the work that needs to be done and the impact it has on your company’s future. Jen Thornton enlightened us on the importance of evaluating the workload and identifying areas where technology could improve efficiency. She stressed the need to define success for new roles clearly, ensuring they contribute to the organization’s long-term goals.

Small Business Hiring Challenges

In the early stages of a business, hiring decisions are often made out of convenience, which may involve bringing in family and friends. While this might work temporarily, I’ve seen firsthand the importance of reassessing your team as your business grows. It’s vital to ensure that each member is not just filling a role but is the right fit for that role.

The OED Assessment Process

Jen introduced us to the OED (Organization Analyst and Design) assessment process, a tool that helps understand a candidate’s work behavior traits. This assessment is key to determining how well a candidate fits the job requirements and the company culture. I’ve implemented similar practical tests in my own hiring process, which have been instrumental in identifying candidates with the right skills and abilities.

We also touched on the legal side of hiring, particularly the importance of using EEOC compliant assessments. These tools must not discriminate based on race, religion, gender, or other protected characteristics. In today’s litigious environment, having compliant tools is not just good practice—it’s essential for defending your hiring decisions.

Onboarding for Success

Finally, we discussed the onboarding process. Jen emphasized the profound mental and emotional impact of onboarding, advocating for a positive and successful experience from day one. I couldn’t agree more. The way we onboard new employees sets the tone for their journey with the company and can significantly influence their mindset and performance.

Conclusion

Our conversation was a treasure trove of insights into the hiring process. From using compliant assessment tools to the impact of effective onboarding, it’s clear that thoughtful hiring and onboarding are not just about bringing in new talent—they’re about laying the foundation for a strong company culture and ensuring the success of your organization.
