Embracing Change and Intentionality: My Journey from Corporate to Entrepreneurship

The Inevitable Crossroads in Corporate Careers

Hello everyone, Doug Thorpe here, and I’m thrilled to share with you a transformative conversation I had on my podcast, Leadership Powered by Common Sense. We delved into a topic that resonates with many: the pivotal moment in a corporate career when you start questioning your fulfillment and the opportunities before you. It’s a moment that can lead you down the path of entrepreneurship, and my guest, Erin Marcus, brought invaluable insights into this journey.

During our discussion, Erin and I explored the reasons why individuals leave the perceived security of a corporate job to start or buy a business. It’s not always about frustration or burnout; sometimes, it’s about assessing your life and realizing you need something different. For many, including myself, it’s about gaining more control over our destiny.

Erin shared her experience of feeling that her work had become contrived, influenced by external factors beyond her control. This realization that what was once considered secure is now the opposite is a powerful motivator for change.

The Illusion of Job Security

We reminisced about the old notion of spending 40 years at a company and receiving a gold watch upon retirement—a rarity in today’s world. Erin made a compelling comparison to high school relationships, questioning the expectation that a job chosen in your early twenties should still fulfill you at sixty. It’s a poignant reminder that growth and change are natural, and our careers should reflect that.

A New Perspective on Purpose

Reflecting on the 2008 crash and the job losses that ensued, I shared how I founded a nonprofit to help job seekers. We focused on personal purpose rather than job titles, encouraging individuals to discover what truly fulfills them. Despite some skepticism, the majority found new energy and excitement in aligning with their true paths.

Erin emphasized the importance of living intentionally rather than in reaction mode. She described her own journey from taking opportunities as they came to intentionally creating the life she wanted. This shift requires taking responsibility for the outcomes of your choices, a pressure that can be daunting but ultimately rewarding.

Intentionality in Daily Life

We discussed the power of setting intentions daily, not as a means to an end but as a way to stay true to one’s path. Erin shared her morning routine of “setting her stage” to make intentional decisions throughout the day, a practice that helps avoid the trap of reactive living.

The Essence of Erin’s Book

Erin introduced her book, “Ready Yet?” with the tagline, “You’ll never do what it takes until you become the person it takes to do it.” The book encapsulates the idea that change begins within. She recounted how her sales conversations often led to deeper discussions about readiness for change, highlighting that external circumstances won’t shift until we do.

Opportunities in Business Acquisition

We touched on the unique opportunities currently available for acquiring existing businesses, thanks to a generational transfer of wealth from baby boomers. With many family-owned businesses lacking successors, there’s a wealth of well-established businesses ripe for acquisition, often with favorable financial terms.

Resilience and Quick Decision-Making

In the latter part of our episode, we discussed the critical role of resilience in entrepreneurship. The ability to recover from setbacks and make decisions swiftly is paramount. We also explored the differences in entrepreneurial mentality between men and women and the challenges of creating sustainable businesses that meet market needs.

A key takeaway from our conversation was the importance of separating personal worth from business success. Acting on intuition and market feedback is crucial, rather than getting paralyzed by internal analysis. We shared personal anecdotes and lessons learned from our entrepreneurial endeavors, emphasizing the need for action and adaptability.

Conclusion: Embracing the Entrepreneurial Spirit

As we wrapped up our enlightening discussion, it was clear that the entrepreneurial journey is as much about personal growth as it is about business success. Whether you’re contemplating leaving the corporate world or already on your entrepreneurial path, remember that intentionality, resilience, and a willingness to embrace change are your greatest allies.

Thank you for joining me on this exploration of what it means to take control of your destiny and live a life of purpose and intention. Until next time, keep leading with common sense, and don’t be afraid to take that leap into entrepreneurship.
